Buying a property in Sardinia
The mere phrase ‘Luxury Villa‘ has for almost half a century conjured up images of the Costa Smeralda, thanks to the Aga Khan’s foresight in establishing the Consorzio Costa Smeralda to control the development and management of this enchanting 55Km stretch of coast in the north of Sardinia.
Seaside villas and aparment complexes abound all over the island, whilst the mountainous interior has much to discover - and protect.
Porto Cervo, the jet-set ‘capital’ of the Costa Smeralda, is bursting with the rich and famous each summer. Sardinia is a big island measuring more than 24,000sq.Km.
Prince Karim Aga Khan was not the first to discover the undoubted pleasures of this, the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. Traces of human remains have been found on Sardinia (Sardegna) dating back to around 250,000 B.C.
To the north is the French island of Corsica, apart from which the nearest neighbours are the Italian peninsula, Spain’s Balearic Islands and Tunisia.
The Nuraghe, the island’s main archaeological megalithic monuments, are scattered throughout Sardinia. Su Nuraxi di Barumini is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
