Driving to and from Italy - Where to Stay

By admin | June 28, 2008

Some of us drive from the UK through France and directly into Italy. Some choose to pass through Switzerland. In fact depending where you are driving from - be it somewhere in the UK or other parts of Europe - you may pass through many different countries including the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and Austria. Here is the place to share your experiences of overnight stops, good and bad. Let’s hope we can create a really useful directory.

We have taken to breaking our journey from Rotterdam to Perugia at Luzern in Switzerland - a beautiful town with excellent hotels and restaurants. The Waldstaetterhof is a really good three star with parking and a restaurant (though we haven’t tried the restaurant, preferring to walk into the old centre) with simple but very elegant and clean accommodation. They offer rooms in traditional style or modern. Might be to avoid in August as no air conditioning in the bedrooms but otherwise we can highly recommend it.

Whilst not a fan in general of Holiday Inns I have to say that their establishment in Lugano is a great overnighter. It’s easy to find off the motorway, has a secure underground parking (important if you have a car full of goodies) and has a rooftop pool open in the summer. Rooms are air conditioned and the breakfast is terrific. It’s within easy walking distance of the lakeside and several good restaurants.
